Through this PSA the above organizations announce the combining of talents to "spur" interest by aspiring historians (public and private school) to embark upon a research project that has as its object the submission of a scholarly paper to this college-scholarship program. All entries will be judged by an impartial panel that includes both lay and professional historians, with the potential for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers to respectively earn scholarships in the amount of $2,500., $1,500., and $1,000.
Limited to Texas students, you are encouraged to utilize special library sources and the collections of colleges and universities, such as the Museum of Southern History, as the basis for completing research on a selected topic (to be announced May 1), this giving students the summer for researching the project. Papers ought not to be more than twenty-five pages in length, and must follow acceptable manuscript style; complete with source citations, bibliography and other addenda, as applicable. All papers must be the product of the student’s research and plagiarism will not be tolerated!
Our desire is to ultimately publish noteworthy papers judged to be outstanding in the review process. The object of the contest is to encourage students to better understand the history field, the significant role museums play in academic life; and evince that higher institutions are intent upon helping students achieve academic excellence; a mission mandated by the sponsoring organization, the Albert S. Johnston Camp, #67, Sons of Confederate Veterans.
To obtain more information on the topic field, or to better understand what judges will be looking for in their review process, after May 1 you may call the undersigned at the H.B.U. campus number, 281-649-3997, or go out to the website of the SCV camp (where this information will be posted). We ask that you benefit your would-be historians by getting this announcement into the hands of interested parties so they may be aware of this opportunity. Thanks in advance for your help.
