“while in the hands of the enemy:civil war military prisons ”

About Our Guest Speaker....Charles W. Sanders, Jr. is an Associate Professor of Historyat Kansas State University. He received his undergraduate degree fromLouisiana State University,Master’s Degrees from Georgia and The
Naval War College, and his Ph.D. from KansasState. His area of concentration is nineteenth-century United States history. He teaches courses onthe Age of Jackson, Manifest Destiny, the Civil War and Reconstruction and historical researchand methodology. He is the recipient of multiple teaching awards and citations and resides inManhattan, Kansas with his family. His most recent publication,
While in the Hands of the Enemy: Military Prisons of theCivil War, examines the establishment of the prison systems of the North and South as well as thepolitical motivations and rationale that shaped the operation of the camps. While the book’s scopeincludes all aspects of prison management, it focuses especially on major installations such asCamp Douglas, Elmira, Camp Chase, and Rock Island in the North andAndersonville, Cahaba, Florence, Danville and the Richmond complexin the South. Drawing on the official records and personal correspondence of the men who directed theprison systems, Sanders conclusively demonstrates that the administrations of Abraham Lincoln andJefferson Davis purposely formulated and executed retaliatory practices that resulted in the sufferingand death of thousands of captives. He offers a clear indictment of the high-level civilian and militaryleaders who knew full well of the intolerable conditions in the camps but refused to act to amelioratethe plight of the prisoners. What emerges is a chilling chronicle of how prisoners came to be regardednot as men, but as pawns to be used and then discarded in pursuit of national objectives. The book is awinner of the prestigious Jefferson Davis Award, given by the Museum of the Confederacy.
