Albert Sidney Johnston Camp #67 Sons of Confederate Veterans Albert Sidney Johnston Camp #67 History
The Albert Sidney Johnston Camp was first organized in Houston, Texas in 1896. Unfortunately, many of the original records, and thus the history of the camp, have been lost. However, it is known that great interest was created in May 1895, when the City of Houston hosted the Grand Reunion of Confederate Veterans. The event was a rousing success, with many Confederate dignitaries in attendance, including Generals Stephen Dill Lee, "Sul" Ross, John G. Gordon, Wade Hampton, and Joseph Wheeler, just to name a few. The "Daughter of the Confederacy", Miss Winnie Davis, was also in attendance, and, in fact, the city had built the "Winnie Davis Auditorium" especially for the occasion. So great was the response to the gallant Confederate that it was decided that Houston needed another camp to accommodate the ex-Confederates and, of course, their sons. It is officially recorded that the National Convention of the Sons of Confederate Veterans was held in Houston, Texas in the year 1920. Albert Sidney Johnston Camp Number 67 hosted the event, and members assembled in the parlor of the Rice Hotel and then walked three blocks to the city auditorium, where the Ball was held. Dr. H.G. Tebo reorganized the camp in 1957, under its original charter and Number 67. The camp's current membership is more than 200. Since the 1920 national convention, the Texas Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans, has held meetings in Houston in 1928, 1931, 1941, 1968, and 1998, all hosted by Albert Sidney Johnston Camp Number 67. |
